"The inspiration for this painting came from listening to my friend’s choir singing “Seal Lullaby”. They introduced the song by explaining that it was about a seal pup left by its mom out on the rocks until she returned. The pup must wait patiently despite the weather and its fear that mom may fail to return. The natural camouflage colouring of the young seal blends well with its surrounding rocky terrain and helps to "hide it" from predators.
As they were speaking – in my mind I could see the pup out on the rocks, alone and waiting. I knew I wanted to paint this scene."
(When we went into the “Covid lock-down period” I thought it would a good time to work on this painting. Feeling a little cut off and isolated gave me an insight into how the seal pup might feel).
