"This spectacularly marked bird, that resides in the southern states of the US, has made a comeback from dwindling numbers before the 1950s thanks to the use of nesting boxes.  It now thrives in freshwater lakes and ponds.  This duck is using its beak to preen, spreading oil to every feather to help waterproof them and keep its feathers aligned ready for flight."
